Fabric Creations

Just last year, I took a Fashion Design class. Since then, I’ve been hooked on making things out of fabric. Currently, this area is just a showcase, as this is one of my skills that’s still in the beginning stages of development.

At the right and below, you can see a small drawstring bookpack which I designed myself. I’ve made two, and both are in use, for field-testing. They come in two sizes, small and large. The large (top right) is 12”x12”x18”. The small is 10”x10”x15”, the perfect size for a couple textbooks and a binder. They are not designed for heavy-duty use.

I’m happy to announce that they should be ready to sell soon, at around $50 a piece.

My first real sewing project, this was amazingly complex, and took a very long time. The chainmaille was made by hand and took probably 5 to 7 hours of work. Fabric is a cotton velveteen and was machine stitched, but the chain was sewn on by hand….twice, because I screwed up the first time. The pattern, of course had to be drafted by hand, something I don’t

recommend to other beginners, unless they’re very ambitious. I love the style, though I don’t wear it much. The shirt was made to fit skin tight, which it almost does, but it does so well enough that I have trouble fitting it over my shoulders. At some point I plan to go back and make another, one I can wear more often, and put on and take off without fear of tearing it. All around it was a terribly fun project. If I ever get around to making these saleable, I hope to have them to somewhere between $75 and $120, which may require a different chainmail weave, possibly machine-made. Oh, and the eyelets (which in the future, I would use grommets instead. Much sturdier.) were designed so that I could lace on sleeves, should I ever feel like making them.
